My mom sent me a video with zero context beyond "I would love to have this." No "happy birthday soon," no "thinking of you." Just a vase shaped exactly like a handbag, and the quiet implication that I should probably do something about it. So I did. I built her a handbag vase by hand, and it turns out I wasn't the only person whose brain short-circuits pleasantly at a bag you can't put your phone in but can put a peony in.

This is that same vase, one of a kind, thrown and shaped by hand in a shared studio in Amsterdam, so no two versions of it, whether you call it a handbag vase or a vase handbag, will ever be identical twins. It's shaped like a soft tote, complete with two curved handles standing up like it's about to hail a cab, except instead of your wallet and three loose receipts, it's holding water and whatever flowers you grabbed on the way home. Some days I think of it as a ceramic purse. Other days, looking at a whole shelf of them, it's just a row of ceramic purses waiting for someone to fill them with peonies instead of lipstick.

The glaze is a raw, textured white I don't fully control. Gold and bronze pool along the bottom and the handles wherever the kiln decides gravity should apply that day. I stopped fighting this a while ago. The glaze moves, the clay decides, and my job is mostly to get out of the way and be delighted.

It's a proper size too. Thirty centimeters long, twenty six tall, ten wide, big enough to work as an actual purse flower vase and not just a decoration that pretends one sad stem is enough. As a handmade vase, it holds real water inside a fully glazed interior, so nothing about it is just for show.

It is now.
